Easy Powerful Mudras

Most people think of yoga as just posture or breathing.

But here is the lesser-known subtle practice in yoga that holds the power to transform your health from the inside out. It’s called the mudra.

Today, I’m going to talk about Kaya Mudras—powerful full-body gestures.

They awaken your inner intelligence, guide your life energy, and balance your entire system—your nervous system, endocrine system, digestive system, and even your immunity.

When done regularly, these mudras prevent diseases, reduce chronic fatigue, calm your mind, and strengthen your body from within.

Today, I’m going to tell you about three such powerful mudras you can start practicing at home and turn your body into the best healing medicine.

Yogendra Yoga Mudra

This mudra is called a symbol of yoga because it makes us realize that our human form is a part of the divine.

We begin to understand that although our human nature is weak, it also holds tremendous potential.

1. How to Practice Yogendra Yoga Mudra

  • Sit in any meditative posture like Padmasana.
  • Take your arms behind and hold your left wrist with the right hand.
  • Look at the point in front of you and breathe normally.
  • Inhale fully. Now, while exhaling, bend forward, arch your spine, and touch your forehead to the ground in front.
  • Relax your shoulders and arms behind.
  • Maintain this posture for at least 30 seconds, breathing normally.
  • Inhale gently and raise your head and body back up, relaxing your arms.
  • Come back to the starting position.

Now exhaling, twist the body and bend forward to touch your forehead to your right knee.

Maintain this position, suspending the breath and doubling the exhalation.

Return to the starting position while inhaling.

Again, exhale, twist to your left, touch your forehead to the left knee, and come back. This was one round.

This forward-bending mudra stimulates all the organs in your abdominal area.

It is very useful for managing all psychosomatic illnesses.

Yogendra Viparit Karani

Although this technique looks like an asan, in Hatha Yoga literature, it is named under mudra because it brings about inner harmony and union of the opposites.

1. What Opposites?

A clear example is the two blood streams—arterial and venous—in our body.

2. How to Practice Viparit Karani

  • Lie supine on the bed, feet together, hands beside the body.
  • Keep the mind calm and body relaxed.
  • Take a full breath in. Now exhaling, slowly raise both legs perpendicular to the ground.
  • Raise the lower trunk, pressing hands under hips and elbows as support.
  • Keep elbows close to the body.
  • Keep trunk slanting, legs upright, toes relaxed, and in line with the forehead.
  • Ensure the back and neck are well-rested on the ground.
  • Adjust hands towards the waist. Fingers extended to the back of the hips, thumbs pressed slightly on both sides of the navel.
  • Complete these steps while exhaling.

Maintain this pose as per individual comfort, but not longer than two minutes. Breathe normally.

3. Coming Back

  • Bend knees, bring them close to your head.
  • Gently lower the hips, take support of hands while inhaling.
  • Slide the back and legs down and return to starting position.
  • Take a few deep breaths and rest.

This mudra reverses gravity’s pressure.

Blood flows back to the heart and brain, improving lymphatic drainage and stimulating the thyroid gland.

Viparit Karani helps balance hormonal health, reduce anxiety, and improve digestion.

Yogendra Yoni Mudra

Yoni Mudra makes you feel like you’re in your mother’s womb. The Sanskrit word for womb is “yoni,” and hence the name.

1. How to Practice Yoni Mudra

Sit in Padmasana or any meditative posture. You may sit on the floor or on a firm chair with a straight back.

  • Keep the spine straight. Close your eyes.
  • Bring both arms up to shoulder level.
  • Place thumbs on ears, index fingers gently on eyelashes.
  • Middle fingers rest on respective nostrils.
  • Ring fingers go above the lips and little fingers below.
  • Elbows should be parallel to the ground.

Passively observe the breath. If the mind wanders, gently bring it back. If arms start aching, bear for a while. If too much, bring them down.

2. Ending the Mudra

Make cups with the palms and place over the eyes.

Blink gently into the cup and then open your eyes. Maintain this mental state for as long as possible.

Yoni Mudra gives a peaceful break from the noise of constant sensory input.

If you get distracted easily, this mudra will help improve your attention.

Normally, our senses are directed outward—this mudra turns them inward.

All these three mudras—Viparit Karani, Yoga Mudra, and Yoni Mudra—are powerful techniques.

With regular practice, they can keep you healthy in both body and mind.

Healing does not begin in the hospital.

It begins at home—with your breath, movement, and awareness.
